Clinical Information

Use as directed by your healthcare provider. Inject the prescribed amount under the skin at the same time each day, usually in the evening. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double up on doses. Your healthcare provider will decide how long you should continue treatment.

Sermorelin is a synthetic peptide that copies the first 29 amino acids of natural growth hormone–releasing hormone. After injection, it travels through the bloodstream to your pituitary gland. There it binds to GHRH receptors and signals the gland to release more of your own growth hormone (GH). GH then triggers the liver to make insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), which supports tissue repair, muscle growth, and healthy metabolism. GH release starts within minutes, but noticeable benefits such as better sleep, higher energy, or improved body composition may take 4–12 weeks of steady use. The boosted GH pulse lasts about 2 hours after each dose.

Do not use if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding (unknown safety). Do not use if you have any type of active cancer or a history of cancer that is not in complete remission, because growth hormone may stimulate tumor growth. Do not use if you are allergic to sermorelin, mannitol, or any component of this product. Avoid use in children under 18 unless specifically prescribed by a pediatric endocrinologist for diagnosed growth hormone deficiency. Do not use if you have uncontrolled diabetes, severe sleep apnea, or diabetic retinopathy without your provider’s approval.

Glucocorticoids such as prednisone may reduce the effectiveness of sermorelin by lowering growth hormone release—your provider may adjust steroid doses. Thyroid hormone replacement can increase IGF-1 levels; your levels may need monitoring. Diabetes medications (insulin or oral agents like metformin) may require dose changes because sermorelin can affect blood sugar; check your glucose more often when starting therapy. Beta-agonist asthma inhalers and stimulants may enhance side effects like jitteriness. Supplements that raise growth hormone (arginine, GABA, melatonin) could increase the chance of joint pain or swelling. Limit alcohol, which can blunt growth hormone release and worsen dizziness.

Very common (affects more than 1 in 10 people): redness, itching, or swelling at the injection site—usually mild and lasting less than 30 minutes. Common (affects 1–10 in 100 people): flushing, headache, dizziness, mild nausea, or tiredness; these often improve after the first few weeks. Uncommon (affects 1–10 in 1,000 people): joint pain, tingling in fingers, or water retention in hands and feet. Rare but serious: allergic reaction with rash, hives, or trouble breathing; sudden vision changes; severe abdominal pain. Call your healthcare provider if side effects are bothersome or do not go away, and seek emergency help for signs of allergy or severe reaction.

Keep lyophilized vials refrigerated at 36–46°F (2–8°C) in the original carton to protect from light. Do not freeze. After mixing with sterile bacteriostatic water, store the solution in the refrigerator and use within 14 days. Keep the vial tightly capped when not in use. Avoid shaking the reconstituted solution; gently swirl instead. Do not store in bathrooms or near heat sources. Dispose of unused or expired medication through a pharmacy take-back program or mix with used coffee grounds in a sealed bag before throwing in household trash. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:How do I mix the powder before my first injection?

A:Your pharmacy or nurse will show you how to add sterile bacteriostatic water to the vial. Aim the liquid against the glass wall and gently swirl—do not shake. Let any bubbles settle before drawing up your dose.

Q:When is the best time of day to inject sermorelin?

A:Most people inject in the evening before bedtime because that follows the body’s natural growth hormone rhythm. Follow the schedule your healthcare provider gives you, and try to inject at the same time each day.

Q:How long before I notice results?

A:Many patients report better sleep and more energy within 2–4 weeks. Body composition changes, such as more lean muscle or less fat, usually take 8–12 weeks. Keep taking the medication as directed and attend follow-up visits for progress checks.

Q:Can I travel with my sermorelin vials?

A:Yes. Keep the vials in a small insulated cooler pack with a cold pack, but do not let them freeze. Carry them in your hand luggage if you are flying, and bring a copy of your prescription for security checks.

Q:What should I do if I miss a dose?

A:Take the missed dose as soon as you remember unless it is within 12 hours of your next scheduled dose. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not take extra to make up for the forgotten dose.

Q:Is sermorelin safe for people with diabetes?

A:Sermorelin can affect blood sugar, sometimes lowering it and sometimes raising it. If you have diabetes, check your glucose more often when starting or changing doses, and let your provider know about any big changes.

Q:Can I drink alcohol while using this medication?

A:Moderate alcohol occasionally is unlikely to cause major problems, but drinking can reduce growth hormone release and may increase dizziness. Limiting alcohol will help you get the best results from therapy.

Q:Will my insurance cover sermorelin?

A:Coverage varies. Many plans consider compounded sermorelin a cash-pay item. Ask your pharmacy for a detailed receipt (invoice) to submit to your insurer or health savings account, but be prepared for possible out-of-pocket costs.
