Clinical Information
Evidence-based details for healthcare providers
Use as directed by your healthcare provider. Your provider will tell you how much to inject and how often. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not give two doses at the same time. Do not change your dose without talking to your provider.
Glutamine is a natural amino acid that your body uses to build proteins, fuel immune cells, and keep the lining of your stomach and intestines healthy. When injected, it enters your blood within minutes and is taken up by muscles, gut cells, and white blood cells. Many people feel less muscle soreness and better recovery within a few days to weeks. The benefits last for about 4–8 hours after each dose, but steady levels build up with regular use.
Do not use if you are allergic to glutamine or any ingredient in this product (can cause rash, itching, or trouble breathing). Do not use if you have severe liver disease, severe kidney disease, or high blood ammonia levels (may worsen these conditions). Do not use if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding unless your provider decides the benefit outweighs the risk. Not for use in children under 18 unless specifically prescribed by a pediatric specialist.
Tell your provider about all medicines, vitamins, and herbs you take. Glutamine may raise seizure risk when taken with some anti-seizure drugs (like valproic acid). It can change how lactulose works, which may raise ammonia in the blood. Cancer medicines that use glutamine pathways (such as methotrexate) may work differently when extra glutamine is given. Large amounts of protein supplements or alcohol can strain your kidneys and should be limited. Always ask your provider before starting new supplements while using glutamine.
Very common (more than 1 in 10 people): mild injection site pain or redness that lasts a few minutes. Common (1–10 in 100 people): stomach upset, bloating, headache, or tired feeling. Uncommon (1–10 in 1,000 people): joint pain, mild rash, or flushing. Rare but serious: severe allergic reaction with swelling of face or throat, trouble breathing, or hives—call 911 right away. Most minor side effects improve within a day and go away after stopping the medication.
Refrigerate at 36–46°F (2–8°C). Do not freeze. Keep the vial upright in the original carton to protect from light. Avoid shaking. After first use, wipe the rubber stopper with alcohol before each withdrawal and discard any unused solution 28 days after opening. Keep out of reach of children. Return unused or expired vials to a pharmacy take-back program or follow local guidelines for sharps disposal.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I inject L-Glutamine safely?
Your provider or nurse will teach you the exact technique. Wash your hands, clean the injection site with alcohol, and use a new sterile needle each time. Most people inject just under the skin of the belly or thigh.
When will I notice results?
Many patients feel less muscle soreness and better energy after 1–2 weeks of regular use. Gut health benefits may take a bit longer. Keep using it as prescribed and tell your provider if you see no improvement after one month.
Can I take this with my protein shakes or other supplements?
Yes, but tell your provider about everything you take. Too much total protein can strain your kidneys. Your provider can help you set safe daily limits.
What if the vial looks cloudy or has particles?
Do not use the solution if it is cloudy, discolored, or has floating particles. Dispose of it safely and contact the pharmacy for a replacement.
Do I need to keep it cold while traveling?
Yes. Use an insulated cooler with ice packs to keep the vial between 36–46°F (2–8°C). Do not let it freeze. Once you arrive, place it back in the refrigerator.
Is it safe for people with diabetes?
Glutamine does not usually raise blood sugar, but everyone is different. Monitor your glucose closely when starting and talk to your provider if you notice changes.
