Ketoconazole and Fluticasone Cream

Compounded
creamDermatologytopical

Ketoconazole and fluticasone cream is a compounded prescription that combines an antifungal medicine with a corticosteroid. Your prescriber should explain why both medicines are needed. Steroid-containing creams are generally avoided for ringworm, athlete’s foot, and jock itch because steroids can worsen these infections. The cause of a rash should be checked first. Use only on the prescribed area and follow the treatment length on your label. Report a spreading rash or worsening symptoms. The need to continue both ingredients should be reviewed at follow-up.

Clinical Information

Evidence-based details for healthcare providers

Use exactly as your prescriber directs. Clean the treatment area gently and let it dry. Apply a thin layer only to the area named on the prescription and wash your hands afterward. Avoid eyes, mouth, and internal genital surfaces. Do not cover with a tight dressing or use in a diaper area unless specifically instructed. Follow the prescribed treatment length and report spreading redness.

Ketoconazole interferes with the production of a substance fungi need for their cell membranes. Fluticasone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammatory signals in skin. The steroid does not kill fungi and can mask infection, so the diagnosis and treatment plan matter.

Do not use if you are allergic to ketoconazole, fluticasone, or the cream base. Do not treat an undiagnosed rash on your own. Tell your prescriber about skin infections, thinning skin, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Children and use on sensitive areas need specific review.

Other steroid creams, inhalers, sprays, or tablets can add to overall steroid exposure. Ritonavir or cobicistat can increase fluticasone exposure if it is absorbed. Harsh cleansers and other active skin products may increase irritation. Review all medicines with your prescriber.

Burning, itching, redness, or irritation may occur. Repeated steroid use can cause skin thinning, stretch marks, or acne-like bumps. Infection may spread while redness is less noticeable. Report worsening symptoms, new sores, or changes in skin texture. Facial swelling or trouble breathing needs urgent care.

Follow the storage directions and beyond-use date on your prescription label. Keep the medicine in its labeled container, out of reach of children and pets. Ask the pharmacist about disposal.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Why combine ketoconazole with fluticasone?

A prescriber may choose both an antifungal and an anti-inflammatory medicine for a particular diagnosed rash. They should also decide how long the steroid is needed and when the skin should be checked again.

2

Can I use this cream for any itchy rash?

No. Itching has many causes, and a steroid can hide or worsen certain infections. Use only for the condition and area your prescriber has assessed. Get advice if the rash spreads or changes.

3

Can I use ketoconazole and fluticasone cream on my face?

Use it on the face only if your prescriber specifically directs you. Facial skin is more sensitive to steroid effects. Keep the cream away from the eyes and follow the prescribed treatment length.

4

Is this FDA-approved?

No. This compounded medicine is prepared for one patient on a prescription. It is not FDA-approved. FDA does not review it for safety or effectiveness before it is made. Separately, approved ketoconazole cream treats specified fungal skin infections and seborrheic dermatitis. Approved fluticasone cream treats steroid-responsive skin inflammation and itching. Those approvals do not cover this combination.
