L-Carnitine Injection

Administration: injection

L-Carnitine Injection supplies a concentrated dose of the amino-acid–like nutrient L-carnitine. Your body uses L-carnitine to move fat into the parts of cells that burn it for energy. Healthcare providers may prescribe these injections to support weight-loss plans, boost exercise endurance, or help with certain metabolic conditions. This sterile solution is made for intramuscular or slow intravenous use under medical supervision.

Clinical Information

Use as directed by your healthcare provider. Your provider will decide the injection amount, site, and schedule that is right for you. If you miss a scheduled dose, contact your clinic to reschedule; do not double the amount. Do not self-inject unless you have been trained and approved to do so.

L-Carnitine carries long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria—the "power plants" inside your cells—where the fat is burned to make energy. An injection quickly raises blood levels, with peak levels in 1–2 hours and activity lasting about 4–6 hours. By improving fat transport, the medicine may help your muscles use fat instead of sugar, which can improve endurance and may support gradual fat loss when combined with diet and exercise. Some people notice better workout stamina within a few days; changes on the scale usually take several weeks.

Do not use if you have a known allergy to L-carnitine or any ingredient in this product (may cause rash or swelling). Do not use if you have uncontrolled seizures, as L-carnitine can make seizures happen more often. Avoid use if you have severe kidney disease or are on dialysis unless closely supervised by a nephrologist. Safety in pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been proven—talk with your healthcare provider first. Not for use in children unless specifically prescribed.

May increase the blood-thinning effect of warfarin (Coumadin) and similar drugs, raising bleeding risk—your doctor may check INR more often. High doses can lower thyroid hormone levels; people taking levothyroxine should have labs monitored. Can raise blood levels of the seizure medicine valproic acid and increase ammonia—tell your doctor if you use Depakote or valproate. Large amounts of caffeine or energy drinks may add to possible restlessness. Always list all medicines, vitamins, and herbal products for your provider.

Very common (more than 1 in 10 people): mild injection-site pain or redness that eases within a day. Common (1–10 in 100 people): stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, fishy body odor, headache. Uncommon (1–10 in 1,000 people): muscle cramps, restlessness, increased heart rate, dizziness. Rare but serious: seizures (mainly in people with seizure disorders), severe allergic reaction with swelling or trouble breathing. Most mild effects improve as your body adjusts; contact your provider if side effects are severe or do not go away.

Store at room temperature 68-77°F (20-25°C). Keep the vial in its original box to protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep tightly closed and use only sterile needles each time. Discard any unused solution 28 days after first puncture or by the expiration date, whichever comes first. Dispose of used syringes and expired medication through a sharps container or pharmacy take-back program; do not throw needles in household trash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:How often will I need to get L-Carnitine injections?

A:The schedule depends on your goals and lab results. Many people receive injections 1–3 times per week, but your healthcare provider will set the exact plan for you.

Q:When should I expect to feel more energy?

A:Some patients notice better workout stamina within the first week. Weight-loss benefits usually appear after several weeks of consistent use along with diet and exercise.

Q:Can I give the injection to myself at home?

A:Only if your healthcare provider has trained you and says it is safe. Follow the exact technique, use sterile supplies, and rotate injection sites to avoid soreness.

Q:Does L-Carnitine interact with my blood thinner?

A:Yes, it can make warfarin and similar medicines work stronger, which may increase bleeding risk. Your doctor may order extra blood tests to keep you safe.

Q:Is this safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

A:The safety has not been well studied. Talk with your obstetrician before using; it is usually avoided unless the benefits clearly outweigh the risks.

Q:What should I do if the solution turns cloudy or changes color?

A:Do not use it. A clear, colorless solution is normal. If it looks cloudy, has particles, or changes color, dispose of the vial safely and contact your pharmacy for a replacement.
