Use as directed by your healthcare provider. Swallow tablets with water and drink plenty of fluids during treatment. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at the same time. Your healthcare provider will decide how long you need to take the medicine.
After you swallow valacyclovir, your liver changes it into acyclovir. Acyclovir blocks a viral enzyme called DNA polymerase, which the herpes virus needs to copy itself. By stopping this enzyme, the medicine keeps the virus from multiplying. You may start to feel relief within 24–48 hours for cold sores or genital herpes and within 72 hours for shingles. The medicine works for about 8–12 hours after each dose.
Do not use if you are allergic to valacyclovir, acyclovir, or any ingredients in this product. Do not use if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction (trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat) to similar antiviral medicines. Tell your doctor before use if you have kidney disease, are on dialysis, have a weakened immune system, or have a bone marrow or kidney transplant. Discuss use during pregnancy or breastfeeding with your healthcare provider.
Valacyclovir may interact with other medicines that affect the kidneys, such as probenecid, cimetidine, mycophenolate, cyclosporine, tacrolimus, and certain HIV medicines like tenofovir. These interactions can raise blood levels of the drug and increase side effects. Non-prescription pain relievers like high-dose ibuprofen may also stress the kidneys when taken together. Always tell your healthcare provider and pharmacist about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements you use. Drink adequate fluids and avoid alcohol binges, which can dehydrate you and strain your kidneys.
Very common (affects more than 1 in 10 people): headache. Common (affects 1–10 in 100 people): nausea, stomach pain, tiredness, dizziness. Uncommon (affects 1–10 in 1,000 people): rash, itching, vomiting. Rare but serious: confusion, hallucinations, seizures, kidney problems shown by less urine or swelling in legs, blood disorders like thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) or hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) especially in weakened immune systems. Most mild side effects improve as your body adjusts. Seek medical help right away for serious symptoms.
Store at room temperature between 68-77°F (20-25°C). Keep the tablets in their original, tightly closed container. Protect from moisture, heat, and direct light. Do not store in the bathroom or near a sink. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Dispose of unused or expired tablets through a pharmacy take-back program or mix with coffee grounds in a sealed bag before placing in household trash.

Can I take valacyclovir on an empty stomach?
Yes, you can take it with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, try taking it with a snack or meal.
What should I do if I forget a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double up to make up for a missed dose.
Is it safe to drink alcohol while taking this medicine?
Light to moderate alcohol is unlikely to cause problems, but heavy drinking can dehydrate you and stress your kidneys. Drink plenty of water and avoid binge drinking while on valacyclovir.
Can I take valacyclovir during pregnancy?
Talk with your healthcare provider first. Valacyclovir has been used during pregnancy without clear evidence of harm, but your provider will weigh the benefits and risks for your situation.
Do I still need to use condoms if I am taking valacyclovir for genital herpes?
Yes. The medicine lowers but does not eliminate the chance of passing the virus to a partner. Using condoms and avoiding sexual contact during outbreaks give extra protection.
How should I store my tablets when traveling?
Keep them in their original container, away from direct sunlight and extreme heat (like a hot car). A small, sealed pill box kept in a carry-on bag is a good option.
