Clinical Information

Evidence-based details for healthcare providers

Use as directed by your healthcare provider. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin once daily, usually at bedtime, unless your provider gives other directions. If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not apply extra cream to make up for a missed dose.

Retinoic acid is a form of vitamin A that speeds up the life cycle of skin cells. It helps old cells shed faster and new cells rise to the surface, opening clogged pores and fading fine lines and dark spots. Clindamycin is an antibiotic that lowers the amount of acne-causing bacteria and reduces swelling in the skin. Most patients notice less redness and fewer new pimples within 2-4 weeks. Smoother skin texture and reduced dark spots may take 8-12 weeks of regular use.

Do not use if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding (retinoids can harm an unborn baby). Do not use if you are allergic to clindamycin, lincomycin, tretinoin, or any ingredient in this cream. Avoid if you have a history of inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis or antibiotic-associated colitis. Not for children under 12 years old unless specifically prescribed. Do not apply to broken or sunburned skin.

Using other topical acne products that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or sulfur at the same time may cause extra dryness or irritation—apply at different times of day if advised by your provider. Clindamycin can enhance the effect of muscle relaxants used during surgery; tell your surgeon you use this cream. Limit products that increase sun sensitivity, such as oral isotretinoin or certain antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline). Avoid excessive alcohol-based skin products or abrasive cleansers, which can worsen irritation.

Very common (more than 1 in 10 people): mild redness, peeling, or dryness in the first few weeks; usually improves with continued use and moisturizer. Common (1 to 10 in 100 people): burning or stinging after application, temporary itching, increased sun sensitivity. Uncommon (1 to 10 in 1000 people): skin discoloration, worsening acne before it improves, oily skin rebound. Rare but serious: severe allergic rash, diarrhea with blood or mucus (sign of colitis). Stop use and seek medical help if you notice severe rash, facial swelling, or persistent diarrhea.

Store at room temperature (68-77 °F, 20-25 °C). Keep the cap tightly closed and protect from direct light, heat, and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Discard any unused cream 90 days after opening or by the labeled expiration date, whichever comes first. Use a pharmacy take-back program or mix with coffee grounds in a sealed bag before throwing away.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

How long before I see results with this cream?

Most people see fewer new pimples and less redness in 2–4 weeks. Full skin-smoothing benefits may take 8–12 weeks, so keep using it as directed even if you do not see quick changes.

2

Should I apply moisturizer with this product?

Yes. Wait about 10 minutes after applying the cream, then use a gentle, oil-free moisturizer to soothe dryness and peeling.

3

Can I use this cream during the day?

Your provider may allow daytime use, but it is usually applied at night because retinoic acid can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Always apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher during the day.

4

What if the cream makes my skin peel or sting?

Mild peeling or stinging is common at first. Use a gentle cleanser, add moisturizer, and consider applying the cream every other night for the first week. If irritation is severe or lasts more than 2 weeks, contact your provider.

5

Can I use makeup over this treatment?

Yes, but let the cream fully absorb and dry before applying makeup. Choose non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) products and remove makeup gently each night.

6

Is it safe to wax or have laser treatments while using this cream?

Retinoic acid thins the top layer of skin, making it more sensitive. Avoid waxing, laser, or chemical peels on treated areas unless your provider tells you it is safe.

7

Do I need to stop this cream before surgery or anesthesia?

Tell your surgeon or dentist that you use topical clindamycin. They may advise stopping a few days before general anesthesia because clindamycin can interact with some muscle relaxants.

8

How should I store and dispose of leftover cream?

Keep it at room temperature away from heat and light. Do not keep it in the bathroom. When expired, return it to a pharmacy take-back site or seal it in a plastic bag with coffee grounds before placing it in the trash.
