Clinical Information
Evidence-based details for healthcare providers
Use as directed by your healthcare provider. Place the prescribed number of drops under your tongue and hold for 60–90 seconds before swallowing. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at the same time. Your provider will decide how long you should continue therapy.
Progesterone is a natural hormone that binds to progesterone receptors in many tissues, including the uterus, brain, and breasts. Sublingual delivery lets the hormone enter the bloodstream quickly, usually within 15–30 minutes, because it is absorbed through tiny blood vessels under the tongue. Peak effects occur in about 1–2 hours and last 6–8 hours. Adequate progesterone helps balance estrogen, supports the uterine lining, improves sleep, and can lessen hot flashes and mood swings.
Do not use if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant (may affect pregnancy). Do not use if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding, known or suspected breast cancer, hormone-dependent tumors, active blood clots, stroke history, or serious liver disease. Do not use if allergic to progesterone, peanuts, or any ingredients in this product. Not for use in children. Talk to your provider before use if you are breastfeeding.
Progesterone may be broken down faster or slower by certain drugs. Strong CYP3A4 inducers like rifampin, carbamazepine, and St. John’s wort may lower progesterone levels, reducing effectiveness. CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole, clarithromycin, and grapefruit juice can raise progesterone levels and side effects. Using with estrogen therapy can increase risk of blood clots. Alcohol and sedatives may worsen drowsiness. Always list all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and supplements you take so your provider can check for interactions.
Very common (more than 1 in 10): mild drowsiness or fatigue, especially within a few hours of dosing. Common (1–10 in 100): headache, breast tenderness, bloating, mood changes, nausea, dizziness. Uncommon (1–10 in 1,000): acne, itching, spotting between periods. Rare but serious: blood clots in legs or lungs, severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling of face or throat, trouble breathing), yellowing of skin or eyes (liver problems). Most mild side effects improve after the first few weeks or by adjusting the dose. Seek medical help right away for severe or lasting symptoms.
Store at room temperature between 68-77 °F (20-25 °C). Keep the bottle tightly closed and upright to prevent leaks. Protect from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Discard any unused medication 90 days after first opening or on the expiration date, whichever comes first. Return leftover solution to a pharmacy take-back program or mix with coffee grounds in a sealed bag before throwing in household trash.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I take sublingual progesterone correctly?
Use the dropper to place the prescribed number of drops under your tongue. Hold the liquid there for about a minute so it can absorb, then swallow any remaining fluid. Do not eat or drink for 5–10 minutes afterward for best absorption.
When will I start feeling better?
Many people notice better sleep and calmer mood within the first week. Hot flash relief and cycle control may take 2–4 weeks. Full hormone balancing can take up to three months, so give it time and keep follow-up appointments.
Can I take this if I am also on estrogen therapy?
Often, progesterone is prescribed with estrogen to protect the uterine lining, but the combination can raise the risk of blood clots. Tell your provider about all hormones you use so they can adjust doses and monitor you safely.
What should I do if the solution looks cloudy or has particles?
Gently roll the bottle between your palms to re-suspend the progesterone. Do not shake hard. If you see large clumps that do not mix or notice a strong change in color or smell, stop using it and contact the pharmacy for a replacement.
Is it safe to drive after taking this medication?
Progesterone can cause drowsiness, especially in the first few hours after a dose. See how the medicine affects you before driving or operating machinery. If you feel sleepy, wait until you are fully alert.
Can men use this product?
This formulation is intended for women’s hormone replacement. Men should not use it unless specifically directed by a healthcare provider, as it can disturb normal hormone balance.
