Clinical Information

Evidence-based details for healthcare providers

Use as directed by your healthcare provider. Apply a thin, even layer to clean, unbroken skin and cover if instructed. Do not rub in. Wash hands after use unless treating the hands. If you miss a scheduled application, apply it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your procedure. Do not apply extra gel to make up for a missed dose.

Lidocaine and tetracaine stop nerves in your skin from sending pain signals by blocking sodium channels. You start to feel numb within 20–30 minutes, and the numbness can last about 30–60 minutes after the gel is removed. Phenylephrine narrows small blood vessels in the skin, which helps decrease swelling and bleeding during the procedure. Together, the ingredients provide fast, targeted pain relief and a cleaner working area for your provider.

Do not use if you are allergic to lidocaine, tetracaine, phenylephrine, other local anesthetics, or any ingredients in this gel (may cause severe rash or breathing problems). Do not use on broken or infected skin, inside the mouth, nose, eyes, or genitals (risk of serious absorption and irritation). Avoid if you have certain heart problems (uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe heart rhythm issues) or circulation disorders because phenylephrine can raise blood pressure. Not for children under 2 years old without specific doctor advice. Talk to your provider if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding before using.

Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription, OTC, and herbal products you use. Beta-blockers (like metoprolol) or MAO inhibitors (such as phenelzine) can raise blood pressure further when combined with phenylephrine. Anti-arrhythmics and other local anesthetics (including topical benzocaine sprays) may increase the chance of heart rhythm changes. Ergot medicines for migraines and some decongestants may also interact. Limit caffeine and avoid other products containing phenylephrine while using this gel.

Very common (more than 1 in 10): temporary skin whitening, mild redness, tingling, or numbness at the application site; usually goes away within hours. Common (1–10 in 100): mild swelling, itching, or warmth at the site. Uncommon (1–10 in 1,000): bruising, prolonged numbness, headache, dizziness. Rare but serious: allergic reaction with rash, hives, swelling of face or throat, trouble breathing; heart rhythm changes; severe high blood pressure. Remove the gel and seek medical help right away if serious reactions occur.

Store at room temperature (68-77 °F, 20-25 °C). Keep the gel in its original, tightly closed container. Protect from heat, direct sunlight, and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Dispose of unused or expired gel through a pharmacy take-back program or mix it with unpalatable waste (coffee grounds, kitty litter) in a sealed bag before throwing it in household trash.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

How long before my procedure should I apply the gel?

Your provider will give exact timing, but most people apply the gel 20–30 minutes before the procedure to allow full numbness to develop.

2

Can I use this gel on broken or irritated skin?

No. Using it on open cuts, burns, or infected areas can cause too much medicine to enter your blood and may irritate the skin.

3

What should I do if the area stays numb for hours after use?

Mild numbness can last up to an hour after removal, but if it continues longer or you notice loss of sensation beyond the treated area, call your healthcare provider.

4

Is it safe to use if I have high blood pressure?

Phenylephrine can raise blood pressure, so let your provider know about your condition. They may monitor your pressure more closely or choose another product.

5

Can I drive after using the gel?

Most people can drive as long as they feel well. If you experience dizziness, blurred vision, or feel light-headed, wait until these symptoms pass.

6

How should I clean the skin after removing the gel?

Gently wipe off any remaining gel with a clean, damp cloth and mild soap if needed. Pat the skin dry—do not rub.
