Clinical Information

Evidence-based details for healthcare providers

Use only as directed by your healthcare provider. Your provider will decide the dose, route (intramuscular or intravenous), and how often you receive it. If a scheduled dose is missed, contact the clinic or your provider right away. Never give yourself an extra dose to make up for the missed one.

L-lysine is an essential amino acid that your body needs to build proteins, repair tissues, and make enzymes and hormones. When injected, it enters your bloodstream quickly and is taken up by cells to support protein synthesis and collagen formation. Effects begin within minutes as blood levels rise, but you may notice improved healing, energy, or nutritional status over days to weeks depending on the reason for treatment. The amino acid is used by the body within several hours and any extra is filtered by the kidneys.

Do not use if you are allergic to L-lysine or any component of this solution (may cause severe allergic reaction). Do not use if you have the rare genetic disorder hyperlysinemia or serious kidney disease that limits your ability to clear amino acids (risk of high blood levels and confusion). Avoid use in babies or children unless a pediatric specialist recommends it. Talk to your provider before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; only use when benefits clearly outweigh risks.

May increase the kidney-toxic effects of certain antibiotics such as gentamicin and other aminoglycosides (moderate concern—your provider will monitor kidney function). Large doses can raise calcium absorption, so tell your provider if you take high-dose calcium or vitamin D supplements (may cause high blood calcium). Report all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products you use. No known food interactions, but a balanced diet helps this medication work best.

Very common (more than 1 in 10 people): pain, redness, or mild swelling at the injection site—usually goes away in a few hours. Common (1–10 in 100 people): nausea, stomach upset, headache, or tiredness that resolves within a day. Uncommon (1–10 in 1,000 people): dizziness, flushed skin, or mild itching. Rare but serious (less than 1 in 1,000 people): severe allergic reaction with rash, swelling of face or throat, trouble breathing; very high blood lysine levels causing confusion or muscle weakness. Seek emergency help for serious reactions.

Store at room temperature 68-77°F (20-25°C). Short excursions 59-86°F (15-30°C) are allowed. Keep in the original, tightly closed container away from light and moisture. Do not freeze or shake. Inspect the solution before each use; do not use if cloudy, colored, or if particles are seen. Keep out of reach of children. Dispose of unused or expired product through a pharmacy take-back program or follow local guidelines—do not pour down the drain.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Why would my doctor prescribe L-lysine as an injection instead of pills?

Injections are used when your stomach or intestines cannot absorb nutrients well, or when you need high doses quickly, such as after major surgery or severe illness. The injected form goes straight into your bloodstream so your body can use it right away.

2

How soon will I feel better after getting the shot?

Some people notice more energy or less muscle soreness within a few days, but results depend on why you are being treated. Your provider will monitor lab tests and your symptoms to see if the injection is helping.

3

Can I give myself the injection at home?

No. This product should be given by a nurse or trained healthcare professional in a clinic or home-health setting. Proper technique is important to avoid infection or nerve injury.

4

What should I do if the injection site becomes very red or painful?

Mild soreness is normal, but if redness spreads, pain worsens, or you see pus, call your healthcare provider right away. You may need an exam to rule out infection.

5

Is it safe to take my daily vitamins with this injection?

In most cases yes, but tell your provider about all supplements you use, especially high-dose calcium or vitamin D. They may adjust doses or check blood levels to keep everything in balance.

6

Can I have alcohol on the day of my injection?

Small amounts of alcohol are unlikely to cause problems, but heavy drinking can strain your liver and kidneys, which process amino acids. It is best to limit alcohol and stay well hydrated.
