Clinical Information
Evidence-based details for healthcare providers
Use as directed by your healthcare provider. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin, usually once daily at night unless told otherwise. If you miss a dose, apply it when you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not apply more than directed or layer extra cream to make up for a missed dose.
• Hydroquinone blocks an enzyme (tyrosinase) that makes melanin, the pigment that causes dark spots. Lightening usually starts in 4–6 weeks.
• Kojic acid also slows melanin production, giving an added brightening effect.
• Retinoic acid speeds up cell turnover and boosts collagen, helping fade marks and smooth fine lines. Skin may start to look clearer in 2–4 weeks, with best results in 12 weeks.
• Azelaic acid fights acne bacteria, calms redness, and gently exfoliates, working within 4–8 weeks.
• Hydrocortisone reduces swelling, itching, and irritation, giving quick relief within days. The combined action helps lighten discoloration, shrink blemishes, and even overall skin tone. Improvements build with steady nightly use and good sun protection.
Do not use if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding (retinoic acid and hydroquinone may harm a developing baby). Do not use if you are allergic to hydroquinone, retinoids, azelaic acid, hydrocortisone, kojic acid, or any other ingredient in this cream. Avoid use on broken, sunburned, or eczema-affected skin. Not for children under 12 years old unless specifically directed by a dermatologist.
Using other topical products that contain alcohol, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulphur, or abrasive scrubs at the same time can increase irritation—space them out or avoid as advised by your provider. Oral or topical steroids taken at the same time may raise the risk of skin thinning; discuss with your prescriber. Photosensitizing drugs (such as doxycycline) may increase sunburn risk when combined—use extra sun protection. Tell your provider about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal supplements you use, even if applied to the skin.
Very common (more than 1 in 10 users): mild redness, peeling, or dryness during the first few weeks—usually lessens with continued use. Common (1–10 in 100 users): stinging, burning sensation, mild itching, temporary skin lightening around application area. Uncommon (1–10 in 1,000 users): persistent irritation, swelling, or worsening acne. Rare but serious: severe allergic reaction (hives, facial swelling), blistering, or signs of skin infection. Stop using the cream and contact your provider if severe or persistent reactions occur.
Store tightly closed at room temperature, 68–77°F (20–25°C). Keep away from heat sources, direct sunlight, and excess moisture. Do not freeze. Use within 90 days of dispensing for best potency. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Dispose of unused or expired cream through a pharmacy take-back program or place in a sealed plastic bag with coffee grounds before discarding in household trash.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long before I see results from this cream?
Most people notice subtle lightening and smoother skin after 4–6 weeks. Deeper discoloration can take 8–12 weeks. Keep using the cream as prescribed and protect your skin from the sun every day for best results.
Can I use this product during the day?
This cream is usually applied at night because some ingredients make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. If your provider tells you to apply during the day, always follow with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and reapply sunscreen every two hours while outside.
What should I do if my skin gets too red or irritated?
First, skip a day or two of application and apply a light, fragrance-free moisturizer. When symptoms improve, restart the cream every other night, then build up as tolerated. If severe burning or swelling occurs, stop using the product and call your healthcare provider.
Can I keep using my regular acne or anti-aging products with this cream?
Talk with your provider before combining products. Using other strong exfoliants, benzoyl peroxide, or acids at the same time can cause extra irritation. You may be asked to alternate nights or stop certain products while using this cream.
Is it safe to use this cream on dark or sensitive skin?
Yes, when used correctly and under medical supervision, the formula can be helpful for darker skin tones and sensitive skin. Start with a small amount, use gentle cleansers, and always apply sunscreen to lower the risk of irritation or uneven lightening.
Do I need to avoid the sun while using this medication?
You do not have to stay indoors, but it is very important to protect your skin. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, reapply often, and use hats or shade whenever possible. Sun exposure can slow results and may worsen dark spots.
