Clinical Information

Evidence-based details for healthcare providers

Apply a thin layer to the affected area as directed by your healthcare provider. Wash hands before and after use unless treating the hands. If you miss an application, apply it when you remember unless it is almost time for your next scheduled use. Do not apply extra gel to make up for a missed dose. Your provider will tell you how long to continue treatment.

Hydrocortisone is a mild corticosteroid that lowers the release of substances in the skin that cause inflammation and itching. Dexpanthenol turns into vitamin B5 inside the skin, drawing in moisture and helping repair the protective barrier. Niacinamide (vitamin B3) supports skin cells, reduces redness, and strengthens the outer layer. The gel usually begins to ease burning or itching within 30 minutes, with visible calming of redness in 1–3 days. Benefits last as long as you use the medication as prescribed.

Do not use if you are allergic to hydrocortisone, dexpanthenol, niacinamide, or any ingredients in this gel (may cause rash or swelling). Do not use on broken skin, open wounds, or infections caused by bacteria, fungus, or viruses (such as cold sores, shingles, or athlete’s foot) because steroids can worsen them. Do not use on the face if you have rosacea or acne without medical supervision. Avoid if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless your healthcare provider decides the benefits outweigh the risks. Not for use in children under 2 years of age without medical advice.

Using other topical corticosteroids, retinoids (like tretinoin), or exfoliating acids (such as glycolic acid) at the same site may increase irritation or skin thinning. Combining with immunosuppressive drugs (including oral steroids) can raise the chance of side effects. Niacin supplements taken by mouth generally do not interact, but tell your provider about them. Avoid applying this gel right before products that contain alcohol, benzoyl peroxide, or salicylic acid because they may deactivate or reduce the effectiveness of the gel. Always list all medicines, vitamins, and herbal creams you use so your provider can check for problems.

Very common (more than 1 in 10 people): temporary stinging or mild burning for a few minutes after application. Common (1–10 in 100 people): dryness, peeling, mild redness. Uncommon (1–10 in 1,000 people): skin lightening, folliculitis (small bumps), increased acne. Rare but serious: allergic reaction with rash, swelling, or trouble breathing; skin thinning or stretch marks after long-term use; hormone effects such as increased body hair in children. Most mild effects improve within a week of continued use or stop within days after discontinuation. Seek medical help right away for severe or persistent reactions.

Store at room temperature 68–77°F (20–25°C) in the original, tightly closed container. Keep away from excessive heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Discard any unused gel 90 days after first opening or by the expiration date on the label, whichever comes first. Dispose of through a pharmacy take-back program or seal in a plastic bag with kitty litter or coffee grounds before throwing in household trash.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

How often should I apply the gel each day?

Follow the schedule your provider gave you, which is usually 1–2 times daily. Using it more often will not speed healing and could increase side effects.

2

When will I notice my skin feeling better?

Most people feel less itching or burning within 30 minutes. Redness and swelling usually start to fade within the first 1–3 days of use.

3

Can I put makeup over the gel?

Yes, but wait at least 15 minutes after applying the gel so it can absorb fully. Choose gentle, non-comedogenic makeup to avoid further irritation.

4

Is it safe to use this gel with my other skin creams?

Tell your provider about every product you use. Avoid layering harsh exfoliants or other steroid creams on the same spot unless your provider says it’s okay.

5

What if my skin gets worse or doesn’t improve?

Stop using the gel and contact your healthcare provider. You may need a different treatment or an exam to rule out infection.

6

Can I use the gel on my child’s eczema flare?

Do not use on children under 2 without a doctor’s guidance. Even in older children, ask the pediatrician first, as long-term steroid use can thin young skin.
