Clinical Information

Use as directed by your healthcare provider. Swallow the capsule with water. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at the same time. Your provider will tell you how long to stay on treatment.

Minoxidil widens tiny blood vessels around hair follicles, bringing more oxygen and nutrients so hairs grow thicker. It starts working inside a few weeks, but visible results usually take 3–6 months. Spironolactone blocks certain hormones (androgens) that cause follicles to shrink, slowing further loss; benefits appear after 3–9 months and continue with regular use. Biotin helps your body build keratin, the main protein in hair, which may improve hair strength over several months. Together, the three ingredients aim to slow shedding, thicken existing hair, and encourage new growth. Effects last only while the medication is taken.

Do not use if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding (spironolactone may harm a developing baby and minoxidil passes into milk). Do not use if you have an allergy to biotin, minoxidil, spironolactone, sulfa drugs, or any part of this capsule. Avoid if you have severe kidney disease, high potassium levels, Addison’s disease, uncontrolled heart failure, low blood pressure, or are under 18 years old. Men should use with caution and only under specialist advice, as spironolactone may affect male hormone levels.

Serious interactions may occur with medicines that raise potassium such as ACE inhibitors (lisinopril), ARBs (losartan), potassium supplements, and salt substitutes containing potassium—this can cause dangerous heart rhythms. Adding other blood pressure drugs (beta-blockers like metoprolol, calcium channel blockers like amlodipine) can lower blood pressure too much. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen may reduce kidney function when combined with spironolactone. Alcohol can increase dizziness from lowered blood pressure; limit use. Check with your provider before taking herbal products like licorice or alfalfa, which may affect potassium levels or hormones.

Very common (more than 1 in 10): increased urination, mild dizziness when standing up, temporary shedding of older hairs in the first 2–6 weeks (sign of new growth cycle). Common (1–10 in 100): breast tenderness or enlargement, menstrual spotting in women, swelling of hands or feet, mild acne, upset stomach, headache. Uncommon (1–10 in 1000): low blood pressure with fainting, high potassium (muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat), unwanted body hair, voice deepening. Rare but serious: severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling, trouble breathing), liver problems (yellowing skin or eyes), severe chest pain or fast heartbeat. Most side effects improve after dose adjustment or stopping the medication. Seek medical help right away if you feel faint, develop severe swelling, or notice signs of high potassium.

Store at room temperature 68–77°F (20–25°C) in a dry place away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep capsules in their original tightly closed container. Do not store in the bathroom or kitchen. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the label. Dispose of unused or expired capsules through a pharmacy take-back program or mix them with coffee grounds in a sealed bag before putting in household trash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:How long before I see new hair growth?

A:Most people notice less shedding in 6–8 weeks and see thicker or new hairs after 3–6 months. Full benefits can take up to 12 months. Keep taking the capsules daily as prescribed to maintain results.

Q:Can men take this medication?

A:Men should only use it if their healthcare provider specifically recommends it. Spironolactone can lower testosterone levels and may cause breast enlargement or sexual side effects in men. Alternative treatments may be preferred.

Q:What if I forget to take a capsule?

A:Take the missed dose as soon as you remember unless it is within about 8 hours of your next scheduled dose. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double up to catch up.

Q:Is it safe to drink alcohol while using this?

A:Small amounts are usually okay, but alcohol can add to dizziness or light-headed feelings caused by lower blood pressure. Drink slowly, stay hydrated, and sit or stand up slowly. Avoid heavy drinking.

Q:Do I need lab tests while on this medicine?

A:Your provider may order blood tests every few months to check kidney function and potassium levels, especially during the first year. Follow their schedule to stay safe.

Q:Will I lose the new hair if I stop taking it?

A:Yes. The medicine works only while you use it. If you stop, new growth may shed and hair may return to its previous state within 3–6 months.
